Structured cabling and switch replacement

The problem

The office had grown from six people to twenty-two on cabling designed for six. Devices were daisy-chained through consumer switches sitting on desks, and the network dropped under load every afternoon.

What we did

We ran new cabling back to a single central rack, replaced the desk switches with one managed switch, terminated and tested every run, and labelled the lot.

The outcome

The afternoon dropouts stopped. The office now has spare capacity for another dozen ports without adding hardware.

Before — daisy-chained switches and unmanaged runs

After — everything terminated back to one rack

The symptom the client reported was “the internet gets slow after lunch”. The cause was twenty-two people sharing a network built for six, through three consumer switches plugged into each other.

Nothing here was exotic. It was a day of running cable, a morning of terminating and testing, and an afternoon of labelling — after which the problem simply stopped happening.

Not sure what's wrong? Neither were most of our customers.
