Data recovery & transfer

Files off a dead machine, a failing drive, or an old computer you can't get into any more — recovered and moved to where you need them.

There’s a particular kind of quiet that follows a computer failing when the only copy of something important was on it. Wedding photos, a business’s invoicing, six years of a thesis.

The useful thing to know is that a computer failing and a drive failing are not the same event, and the first is far more common than the second. Before you assume anything is lost, let us look.

What's included

  • Recovery from drives that still spin up, including machines that won't boot
  • Transfer to a new computer, an external drive, or cloud storage
  • Up to 200GB at the base price, then $29 per additional 200GB
  • A file-by-file check that what came off the old drive actually opens on the new one

What's not included

  • Clean-room recovery for physically destroyed drives — we'll refer you to a specialist and tell you roughly what it should cost
  • Any guarantee of recovery from a drive with mechanical failure. We'll assess first and tell you the odds before you spend anything

Common questions

The computer won't turn on at all. Are my photos gone?

Usually not. A machine that won't power on most often has a failed power supply, board or battery — the drive inside is frequently untouched. Being unable to boot and having lost your data are two different problems that look identical from the outside.

How much data can you move?

The $94 covers up to 200GB, then each additional 200GB is $29. Most home users are well under the first tier — a decade of photos is typically 50–150GB.

Can you get files off my old computer even though I don't have the password?

In most cases yes, if you can demonstrate the machine is yours. Physical access to a drive and access to an account are different things.
